Sweet Song Coming 'Round

by Jeni & Billy

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

This is a lovely album for anyone who yearns for authenticity in their music. Anyone who’s seen Appalachian duo Jeni & Billy live will have been holding their breath for this album. You will be delighted they have released this live collection of their “hits,” complete with Jeni Hankins’ riveting and delightful explanations behind each song. Each and every story will make you laugh or cry, whether it’s the tale of the grave of her moonshining great-grandpa or her Uncle Roy Lee’s beloved pink car. The way she describes cedar trees swaying in the breeze or a young child’s innocence in the face of adult alcoholism is almost as pleasing as listening to her bell-like vocals and Billy Kemp’s deft plucking. – Maverick Magazine, UK

about

The Question that folks ask us more than any other when we are on tour is “Don’t you ever get tired of traveling?” And the Answer is “Yes.” When the laundry gets high, the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches get old, and the tire on the Airstream blows, we do feel a bit like going home to our ramshackle hundred year old house and being nothing but reclusive songwriters.
But, we’ve both said it and the truth is that we love performing and we love all that being touring musicians brings: the chance to see Joshua Tree National Park, to eat chips and mushy peas in Bridlington, to teach songwriting in Toronto, to eat cold soups in Maryland and spicy beans in California, and to make new friends at every stop.
Family reunions are big up on Jewell Ridge. They are full
of potato and jello salads and require a new outfit complete with scratchy tights. Our line of work seems to lead us to something akin to a family reunion wherever we go. Luckily, scratchy tights are not required, and jello salads rarely make an appearance!
We dedicate this record to our extended family from California to Cottingham, from Toronto to Texas, from Virginia to Vermont, who welcome us to their homes, driveways, libraries, schools, coffeehouses, festivals, and shindigs year after year. Without your encouragement and kindness, we would only camp in our back yard and sing to the birds.

We love you. Jeni & Billy

about

Jeni Hankins London, UK

Jeni Hankins grew up in the coalfields of Appalachian in Southwest Virginia among a family of miners, moonshiners, and journalists. Her writing pulls the grit, gumption, and keen sense of observation out of that heritage like drawing water from her grandmother’s well.

In every song, Jeni’s “true sense of place shines through – old as the hills, but brand new at the same time.”
