A 100% Cotton tote bag with long handles in apple green. One side is plain green while the other side shows Jeni's watercolor illustration of her Aunt Edith (now in her nineties) and cousins Ran and Jack. These real-life characters are standing in front of a windcharger – a type of windmill – installed by Jeni's Great-grandfather, Avery Smith. The original photograph on which Jeni based her watercolor is from the 1940's.
Jeni's family were the first people on Smith Ridge in Tazewell County, Southwest Virginia, to get electricity. The electricity was generated by the windcharger and powered a single light bulb. The Smith family's lightbulb was seen as either an instrument of the devil or a wonder of the world, depending on the attitude of passersby.
Jeni's grandmother, Ann, told her the story of the windcharger which inspired Jeni's song "Polishing Stars" from the Jeni & Billy album "Heart of the Mountain."
