about

Journeys and what might be on the other side of them. What you’re hearing is the first time we played from start to finish the song that we’d just written. I love the simplicity of recordings like this. We’ve only finished putting the words on scraps of paper in hard to read handwriting. We’re still recalling the tune we just invented. And I also think there’s a train or the sea or some amp interference in the background which swells like waves. Alfred is just making up the guitar solo from his head in the moment. I’m deciding how to place each word inside the melody. It’s all being born as a song. Enjoy! – Jeni

lyrics

String Unraveller
(For Norman H. Cross)

What if you find it’s the end if the line
But the journey has yet to begin?
What’s on your mind as it starts to unwind
Unravelled like an old piece of string

Perhaps if you get to the end of the thread
You’ll tell us what we long to know
Brave traveller
String unraveller
Safe journey wherever you go

Been such a long ride
Now the string is untied
It’s amazing we made it this far
Your mother would know
On the picture she wrote
This is you just as you really are

If you land on a star
Will you know where you are
The applause at the end of the show
Brave traveller
String unraveller
Safe journey wherever you go

What if you find it’s the end of the line
But the journey has only begun
The thread now unfurled
To the end of the world
So many songs still to be sung

Will you rise higher
To the heavenly choir
And play the old songs from your star
Brave traveller
String unraveller
Safe journey wherever you are

about

Jeni Hankins London, UK

Jeni Hankins grew up in the coalfields of Appalachian in Southwest Virginia among a family of miners, moonshiners, and journalists. Her writing pulls the grit, gumption, and keen sense of observation out of that heritage like drawing water from her grandmother’s well.

In every song, Jeni’s “true sense of place shines through – old as the hills, but brand new at the same time.”
